Which side to sit
Most travellers prefer the right-hand side travelling towards Ella, but the views are good on both sides – and everyone ends up at the open doors.
Our tips for the journey
Bring snacks and water – there is no dining car, although vendors walk through the train at some stations. Pack a light jumper: the carriages get cool as the line climbs above 1,500 metres. Keep bags small, as luggage space is limited; on our tours your main luggage travels in the vehicle and meets you at the hotel in Ella.
The most photographed stretch is between Haputale and Ella, including the Nine Arches Bridge just before Ella. Standing at the open doors is popular but dangerous – hold on tightly and pull back in tunnels.
